Ask Mollie: How to Make New Friends

Dear Mollie,

I am having a hard time adjusting from being away from my family and making new friends. Do you have any suggestions?

— Lissa

Dear Lissa,

Being a newly wed, moving to a new city, and being away from family and friends; any one of those can make you feel frazzled and when you are a new military wife, they all usually come hand in hand.

I can offer two things to help you make the transition smoother. First, your husband is your new family. You two have started a life together. You get to make up new traditions, and family values that the two of you celebrate! Make sure you take the time to be doing these things, Maybe it’s a walk after dinner, or a date night once a week when he is not working in the field. When it’s just the two of you, you learn to rely on eachother. Take time to make your home: your own.

The greatest thing about the military is the ready-made instant support groups for the families. There are so many clubs, events, and functions for wives. Get the base paper, check on line, and ask other wives whose husband’s work with your hubby and get involved. Remember a lot of other wives are just like you, new to the base and wanting to make friends.

Before you know it, you will have a new group of friends and events to go to every week!

Semper Fiesty!

Best,

Mollie
